Beauty Myth: You Don’t Need to Wear Sunscreen in the Winter

In the summer time, you know the first thing to do before stepping outside into the beaming sun is to apply sunscreen. In the winter though, there is no need to worry about sunscreen, right? Not exactly. You may associate the winter time with cold weather and cloudy skies, but don’t be mistaken – the sun is still beaming and your skin needs protection.

Protecting your skin is crucial for healthy, glowing and younger-looking skin. The sun is a contributing factor to aging, as the sun’s UV rays can damage the skin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and hyper pigmentation (age spots and discoloration).  During the winter you may not be running around in a bikini on the beach, but this doesn’t mean your skin is not being exposed to the sun! Whether you’re driving in your car, going for a walk, or hitting the slopes on the weekend, your skin needs protection. When it comes to choosing a sunscreen we always recommend natural, physical sunscreens, as they block UV rays entirely, and do not need time to “settle in” but rather provide immediate protection.

Ingredients like Zinc Oxide found in our Mineral Face Shield® and Biolight™ Brightening Daytime Protection Cream, and Titanium Dioxide, found in our Hydra 4® Day Protection Cream are two forms of physical sunscreens that work by sitting on top of your skin, blocking a broad spectrum of UV Rays. These products also give your skin the moisturization it needs, especially during the winter time. Plus, they contain antioxidants that protect your skin against free radical damage that stems from not only the sun, but air-borne pollutants, detergents, and chemicals – all helping to maintain damage-free, healthy, and beautiful skin!
